chilaquiles

After the farmers market, we went to the Hungry Cat for brunch. I had some awesome chilaquiles, and was inspired to make some at home. (For the record, these are nowhere near as good as the ones at Hungry Cat.)

I shallow-fried the flour tortillas and grill-roasted the poblanos. Salsa is store-bought. I thought this was mildly successful, but not great. I'll have to keep trying. I forgot the egg, too.

farmer's market salad

We met up with some friends at the Hollywood farmer's market this weekend and I splurged on some chanterelle mushrooms.

This was so luxurious, we both felt a little spoiled. I sautéed the mushrooms in butter, garlic and thyme, and dressed the greens with a simple vinaigrette. The addition of Marcona almonds just added to the decadence.

mid-october grilling

I love having a grill!!

These were so tasty and juicy. I ground a mix of chuck and sirloin and tried not to make the patties too thick like I usually do. With the side of zucchini, and of course the usual topping, this was a nice outdoor meal.

not so exciting

So, my own meals have been considerably less inspired. This was a pasta made with jarred pasta sauce. Very lackluster, to say the least.

Meh, as a friend of ours says when something is kind of blah. I think it's an appropriate descriptor for this pasta. I couldn't even doctor it up to taste good.

guest chef series #8: clambake

Our friends J & S invited us for dinner. It was amazing.

This may be the ultimate one-pot meal. I think S layered in the lobsters, then the clams, tied in cheesecloth, and then the chorizo and corn. Served with crusty bread, potatoes, butter, and lemon wedges, it was a very tasty meal.

chile tacos

I've been mildly obsessed with grilling chiles. They come up with such a roasty, meaty flavor, it's really a great, simple addition to the meal.

I put a spice rub on the chicken, and grilled it, along with the poblano chiles. I guess grilling the chiles is slightly labor-intensive, but I think the reward is worth it. You have to blacken the skin, and then, once the chiles are soft and have collapsed, put them into a paper or plastic bag. Once they've steamed a bit, rub off the burnt skin, and remove the seeds and ribs. Slice up and enjoy! I usually do a bunch at a time, and keep the rest in the fridge for snacking on.

kalbi

We had D's clan over for a group birthday celebration, and I made up a huge batch of kalbi. This was my first time making it, and I'm pretty pleased with the results.

The meat was tenderized by the kiwi I threw into the marinade (or so the theory goes). I let it marinate overnight, with a few rotations so it was evenly marinated. It grilled up beautifully and we served it with rice, kimchi, and lettuce leaves.
[short ribs, garlic, ginger, soy sauce, sesame oil, kiwis, sugar, rice vinegar, scallions]
